What makes you stand out in a list? That is right, your name. When you arrive at a convention, school or event, the only detail people may have about you is your name. It is a name that gives others that first impression, often prior to actually seeing you. The same train of thought happens with businesses. Building an app brand often starts with creating an Android app name that your business can be identified with.

Choosing your Android app name

Your Android app name should be taken seriously. This step, a step that you may not have thought through, could be the make, or break, of your app. The naming of your app will bring the personality of the app to life even before the app has had the chance to be downloaded and viewed.

Today we are going to look at the importance of your app name, and how this seemingly small detail can make, or break your app. The following four points are what you need to consider when choosing your Android app name:

1: Using Keywords: If you want your app to be discovered in organic searches, then you should consider using a keyword tool such as Google AdWords to help you find the perfect name. Google AdWords highlights keywords that are currently being searched for. Use these examples in your app name and app description to help your app in organic searches.

2: Trial and error – If at first you don’t succeed, try, and try again. When publishing your app you should try a number of different names to see which trends more in searches. Be prepared to test out a number of app names before you get the one that is right for your brand.

3: Relevance – You may think that this is common sense, but you would be surprised at the number of apps we see failing because the name has no relevance to the app. You want people to search and download the app because they were looking for an app of this type. If your Android app name has no relevance to your app, you will be driving the wrong audience to your app. You may initially have great downloads, but this will backfire as the app will not be used by these people, and you will suffer from app deletions which will negatively affect your app in searches. Think sensibly before you name your app.

4: Competition – You may think that that a keyword with 1 million views per week is perfect for your app, but think again. Using a keyword with a lot of competition will prove counterproductive, because when the word is typed in to a search, all these competitors will show up in the results. You need to think about the competition rating within AdWords before deciding upon the words that you will include in your name and description.
